Looking for something to do? Here is my pick…
There are a few good events going on today. One event that is really grabbing some steam is Big Gay Ice Cream stopping at Poole’s Downtown Diner (426 S. McDowell Street, Raleigh) as part of its Southern Tour 2014. That is going on from 3 to 10 pm. Hugely popular in New York. Later stops include Charleston, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Oxford. www.biggayicecream.com
Another event that is seems popular is Cooke Street Carnival. The event held on Cooke Street between Lane and Jones Street in the Oakwood neighborhood (Downtown Raleigh). There will be 11 Food Trucks: Chirba Chirba, American Meltdown, D’Burritos, Belgian Waffology, Parlez-Vous Crepe, The Parlour, The Humble Pig, Philly’s Cheesesteaks, Sympathy for the Deli, Pie Pushers, and Bulkogi.
My Pick
The local family owned greenhouse and garden center celebrates 40 years today. Founder Jo Ann Dewar still works the garden center along with two other generations. I really enjoyed the Flora & Food food truck series, which kicked off in the spring. Both CJ’s Street Food and Big Mike’s BBQ (soon opening a Cary location) will be here with Holly Springs brewery, Bombshell. Also, The Holland Grill Company for a grilling demonstration and Atlantic Home Entertainment will show off some outdoor audio and visual items. For the kids, a bounce house, pumpkin painting, and games. The event is from 9am to 6pm and the garden center is located at 8224 Holly Springs Road, Raleigh. www.fairviewgardencenter.com.
Also, check out “Thursty’s” for more breweries and such with trucks. Deep River celebrates Oktoberfest, which will go on from 1-9pm.
