April 13th: Triangle Food Truck News

Each Monday I recap food truck news as it relates to the Triangle area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill).  Bringing news that impacts food truck owners, fans, or those curious.

Porchetta to open in Southpoint

The biggest news last week broke on Twitter and the local News & Observer’s Andrea Weigl published more details on when the Porchetta team will open their restaurant.  What’s interesting with this Brick and Mortar opening is the location will be inside Southpoint Mall.  Except for the temporary stand Sweet Traditions had inside Triangle Town Center, a local food truck brand has not operated a non-mobile location within a mall.  Meaning this is a first for the area and really cool idea (Let’s all go to the mall… in-May!)

My first impression would be a mall location would be very limited in what you could build out.  I met Nick at his food truck this weekend, he calmed my misconception by expressing they do have flexibility.  This could be all part of a up and coming trend of bring local business back into the mall.  Both Andrea and Nick with Porchetta mentioned Southpoint is looking to focus on local dining options within the food court.  Can’t wait to see what else Southpoint has in the works…

Nick also referenced this GQ article on this food court trend.

Sarge’s closes… sort of

Julius (Sarge) informed me that he’s decided to close Sarge’s restaurant in Rolesville. He cited the closing is due to ongoing health concerns.  Though fans can breath a sigh of relief as the food truck will still operate.

The “sort of” twist is Sarge is in the process of converting the restaurant space into a commissary.  The location is on US 401 and not far from 540, which makes a good location for Northern Wake mobile food operators.

Chatham Street Chowdown

It’s finally here, the Chatham Street Chowdown, Town of Cary’s Food Truck Rally.  I was at yesterday’s Downtown Cary Food and Flea (every second Sunday of the month) and the town has done a great job in the area promoting the event with  flyers all over.  Logistically Chatham Street will be closed between Academy and Harrison with 15 trucks and seating areas.  Which allow fans to move about the area and admire the quaint downtown and local business.  The event is Sunday from 12 to 4:30pm.

I hope you can recall last year when Gussy’s organized a rodeo that was just for the Durham Rescue Mission.  The event was participated by Gussy’s, Stuft, Chick-N-Que, and Not Just Icing, where they provided food to those at the Rescue Mission for free.  Gus wants to do the event again expanding it to more trucks and Rescue Mission locations.  If your food truck is interested, contact Gus at 919-656-7096 or Direct/Private Message .  The event was covered by many media outlets, including a live shot by Anthony Wilson from ABC 11.

ROAM is coming to Orlando, Florida

Hopefully you caught last week’s special post on the 2014 event.

Circle your calendars now for ROAM 2015 in Orlando. This is the only food truck industry conference that brings owners and industry-specific people together.  I’ll have a special post just on my experience here in San Antonio.  But in short, if you are someone in the food truck business, I think you need to be here.  The dates are November 15 and 16th, which is Sunday and Monday.  Hopefully, those are admin days and only 8 1/2 hours (by car) between the Triangle and Orlando.  I hope we can exponentially expand our representation for this one.

Food Trucks and Restaurants to support (RED) in June 2015

I came back from the ROAM Conference early November 2014 was about the (RED) organization. The (RED) Organization fights AIDS in Africa where 2/3 of those with AIDS are located.  In 2014, the organization had events around the food and beverage industry.  However, they want to make it bigger and get everyone involved.  It would be a nice scene to see food trucks featuring a (RED) menu next June!

For more details on the event, check out details at (RED)‘s website dedicated to the food and beverage industry.
